Do you know why the power, cable, or telephone is out or when it will be back on?

No.  The Streetsboro Police Department is not notified of this information by utility companies.  You would need to contact the individual utility companies directly for that specific information.  Ohio Edison maintains a 24-hour telephone number (1-888-544-4877) for reporting a power outage.  Do not call the police department to inquire, as we have no more information than you have, and 911 lines need to remain open for emergency calls.

How do I obtain a copy of an incident report or accident report?

In Person

Completed and approved police reports are generally available five (5) days following the filing of the report, in person at the police department.

By Mail

Completed and approved reports can be mailed out, provided you send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the police department (Attn:  Records).  The cost of a report is .5 (five) cents per page.  If copies of photos are requested, they are provided on a CD in electronic format at a cost of $1.00 (one dollar).

Online - Incident Reports

Completed and approved incident reports can be e-mailed to you in .PDF format by filling out an online report request form.  Click on Get An Incident Report  on our home page to submit your incident report request online.  Online incident report requests will be responded to Monday-Friday only, within a reasonable amount of time.  For online incident report requests, you will receive the incident report only.

Online - Accident Reports

You may directly download a copy of an approved SPD accident report by querying our Accident Report Database at your convenience 24/7 from any web connected computer.  Click on Get An Accident Report on our home page.  Photographs are not available via e-mail transmission at this time.

To inquire further regarding the availability of a police report, contact the on-duty Dispatcher at the police department at (330) 626-4976.

While most records are open for public viewing and/or copying, there are a few exceptions ...

  1. Certain information may be redacted from reports in accordance with current Public Records Law and Privacy Laws.  A good example of this would be Social Security Numbers.
  2. Cases which are currently under active prosecution may not be released by this department.  Requests for copies of these reports shall be deferred to the Prosecutor's Office for disclosure under "discovery" proceedings in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code.
  3. Cases under active investigation, containing sensitive information which if released may jeopardize the successful investigation of the case, or may cause an uncharged suspect to flee, may be withheld.

These are some general guidelines.  Our goal is to release records for public scrutiny in the vast majority of requests.  And while some instances may require the temporary with-holding of a record (or portions thereof), we are here to work with you to obtain the information you need.

I just received a traffic citation from a Streetsboro Police Officer.  How do I pay that?

Payment for traffic citations is made through the Portage County Municipal Court, not at the Streetsboro Police Department.  The court can be contacted by phone at (330) 297-3639.  Additionally, traffic citations that are eligible for waiver by mail may also be paid online through the Portage County Municipal Court web site.  Go to www.co.portage.oh.us and click the link for "online ticket payment waivers."

Is parking permitted on city streets within Streetsboro?

Under city ordinance, parking is generally not permitted on dedicated city streets within Streetsboro.  However, if you are having a large gathering and anticipate more vehicles than your driveway can hold, you may contact the police department to request "permission to park" on most residential streets, which will be logged by the on-duty Dispatcher.  This will note your name and phone number, along with the location and time frame permission is being requested.  The dispatcher will advise you of the required conditions of the permission (same side of street, no blocking of driveways or fire hydrants).  This permission may be revoked at the sole discretion of the police department.

I want to report drug related activity to the authorities.  What should I do?

If I call the Streetsboro Police for a record check what will you do?

Upon request, this agency will check its records for any reports involving a specified individual.  Such "record checks" are done within the records maintained by the Streetsboro Police Department only, and do not involve records which may be on file with other agencies or courts.  To obtain a more complete criminal background check we recommend submitting a fingerprint card to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).  For information on services offered by BCI visit their website at http://www.ag.state.oh.us/sections/bci/

A solicitor came to my house today selling merchandise.  Are solicitors allowed in Streetsboro?

Solicitors are allowed under city ordinance.  However, minus a few exceptions under the ordinance, active solicitors are required to have a permit issued through the police department that also includes a photo ID.  Refer to Streetsboro Codified Ordinances  for further information on solicitors.  If you are approached at your home by a solicitor without a permit and/or photo identification, contact the police department.

My company would like to hire a Streetsboro police officer for off-duty security/traffic control?  How do I do that?

It is strongly recommended to arrange for this service three (3) weeks in advance.  There is a four (4) hour minimum show-up payment for all approved details.  If you need to cancel, you must call Dispatch at least two (2) hours in advance, otherwise you will be charged the minimum show-up payment.

I have a complaint regarding a Streetsboro Police Officer.  What should I do next?

The police department takes pride in the service we provide to our community.  Sometimes, there is a legitimate question regarding what an officer did, or why an officer did or did not take a particular action (ex: why did an officer tow my vehicle?  why was I given a ticket instead of a warning?).  Often times, an explanation by a supervisor can resolve most questions or concerns, so the first step is to contact the police department and ask to speak to the officer's Sergeant.  If that does not resolve the matter to your satisfaction, the supervisor will arrange for you to complete a written complaint form outlining the specifics of your complaint.   Our procedure for processing citizen complaints, as well as a downloadable copy of the department's citizen complaint form, is also posted on this web site under Forms Gallery.  Please check there for further information concerning complaints.  You will be provided with a copy of your completed complaint form at the time of filing, and further information may be made available to you at that time as well.

My vehicle was impounded by the Streetsboro Police Department.  How do I retrieve it?

If your vehicle was impounded, you will need to come to the Streetsboro Police Department in person to sign a release for your vehicle.  This signed release is required in order to retrieve your vehicle from the tow company holding the vehicle, and your vehicle cannot be released without it.  Vehicles are released to the registered vehicle owner only.  As the vehicle owner, if your vehicle was towed due to driving under suspension (DUS) or driving under the influence (DUI), or Wrongful Entrustment, in certain cases your car cannot be released until at least your initial appearance in court answering to those charges.  The court may issue you a vehicle release document at that time that you must present in person at the police department, or, the court may order that your vehicle be immobilized for up 180 days, or forfeited, depending upon prior DUS or DUI offenses.

I have a question about the fee I was charged when retrieving my vehicle from impound.

The Streetsboro Police Department has no role in the setting of any impound or storage fees charged by a tow provider, as they are private companies.  Questions regarding any tow fee should be addressed directly with the tow company.

Isn't there a law against "road rage?"

The term "road rage" was created in the media to describe emotion based reckless, aggressive, and intimidating driving.  There is not a specific offense in Ohio law entitled "Road Rage," but the actions which may be labeled "Road Rage" are specific offenses.  Among these are: menacing, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, impeding, and assault, to name a few.

What percent can the windows be tinted on my vehicle?

On Ohio registered vehicles, window tint must allow 50% light transmittance on the rear and side windows, and 70% transmittance on the windshield.  In other words, the tint cannot be darker than 50% on the side and back, and 30% on the windshield.  Remember, auto glass is slightly tinted from the factory, and will make the tint you apply to your windows darker than advertised by the tint manufacturer.  Additionally, no reflectorized material is permitted on any part of the windows and decals are prohibited on a the rear windows and below the AS/1 line on the front windshield, except a State of Ohio Vehicle Inspection Sticker.

How many drinks can I have before I become legally intoxicated?

There is no reliable means to predict how many alcoholic beverages an individual can consume before becoming "drunk" or impaired.  However, it is more than just two beers.

In past years, various companies and websites have published charts which try to predict the blood alcohol content (BAC) you will attain if you weigh "X" pound and consume "X" numbers of drinks in "X" amount of time.  However, these charts only consider three variables.  Actually, there are many more variables which must be considered, for instance, the SIZE of the drinks, so a generalized estimate as to level of intoxication or potential BAC would be very unreliable.  It is always wiser to have a designated driver or to call a cab.  The legal limit in the state of Ohio is .08 BAC.

What colors and types of neon lights are legally allowed on my vehicle?

Lights must not rotate, oscillate, or flash, but state law does not prohibit the use of colored neon lights under your car as long as they do not interfere or blind other drivers.  Ohio Revised Code, section 4513.17 prohibits flashing lights on motor vehicles with the exception of emergency vehicles, turn signals, and hazard flashers.

Colored lights, such as neon lights around a license plate are not illegal so long as a separate white light is the PRIMARY illumination for the plate.  If the neon light is the only source of illumination for the plate, or it changes the visible colors of the plate, the neon lights could be illegal.  State law requires a white light to illuminate the rear license plate.

Is a front license plate required on my vehicle?

Yes.  Failure to display a front license plate on an Ohio-registered car is a registration violation.

Are Streetsboro Police Officers under a quota for writing traffic citations?

No, Streetsboro Police Officers are under not "quotas."  Streetsboro officers conscientiously enforce Ohio traffic laws, and will also undetake enforcement actions based upon accident data, and/or specific complaint areas within our community.

How fast can I go over the posted limit without receiving a speeding ticket?

You may be issued a traffic citation for any speed over the speed limit.

What is the grace period for my drivers license expiration?

90 days prior to the expiration date, you may renew.  After your expiration date, there is no "grace" period.  You can be cited for having an expired driver license.

How do I obtain a restraining order?

Restraining orders are not issued by the Streetsboro Police Department, and the police department cannot enforce a restraining order by arrest.  Violating a restrainig order is a civil matter, and is addressed by filing against the violating party in civil court.  Consult with a private attorney regarding obtaining a restraining order.

Temporary Protection Orders (TPO's) are issued through the Ravenna Municipal Court system for specific instances of Domestic Violence and Stalking.  Civil Protection Orders (CPO's) are issued following the filing of a petition in the Portage County Domestic Relations Court.  Both of these types of court orders may be enforceable by arrest.  Contact Portage County Victim's Assistance at (330) 297-3850 for further information regarding TPO's and CPO's.
